Millenáris Széllkapu Park Hanging Garden

An integral aspect of the Széllkapu Park design program was the incorporation of a multi-storey steel structure designed as a captivating three-dimensional hanging garden. This structure serves multiple functions, including facilitating smooth accessibility between the new park and the adjacent old park on the north side. Furthermore, it visually complements the southern boundary of the new park, conceals the expansive façade of the neighboring shopping center, and helps to mitigate noise generated by downtown traffic. The 4-story hanging garden installation spans a total length of 230 meters, with a width of 6.6 meters and a height of 19.3 meters at the top. Park visitors have access to the ground level, as well as the 1st and 3rd floors, which feature partial installation of solar panels. The 2nd floor has been designated as a service floor, serving functional purposes for the overall structure. The key components of the green façades consist of pre-grown climber panels. These panels, made of custom-sized wire mesh net, form a distinctive trellis system. They are strategically positioned within the gaps between the steel supporting structure columns, which are intentionally arranged in a non-vertical order. The panels are then stretched and secured onto stainless steel tube frames, creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional frame for the green façade. The plant design of the green façade follows the pattern of the building intervals, where evergreen and deciduous areas alternate in a rhythmic manner. The two opposite façades are inverses of one another. This carefully orchestrated arrangement creates a captivating sight from the inner part of the park, extending its green coverage as much as possible over the neighboring shopping mall's façade. Thanks to the pregrown climber panels the hanging garden had already 45% green coverage when the park was opened in 2020.

This project is very dear to us, as the design and construction of the four-storey hanging garden also marked the beginning of the birth of Green Wall Design Ltd. The seamless and fruitful collaboration among designers Andrea Balogh and Csaba Majoros, subcontractor Zoltán Czérna, and green façade builder Ferenc Szentkirályi-Tóth laid the foundation for ongoing cooperation and future endeavors. This project marked the beginning of our journey and inspired us to continue creating innovative and sustainable green solutions.
