Metrodom Green I. Residential Green Façade
Metrodom Green I.
Residential green facade
The green façade implemented in Phase I of the Metrodom Green premium residential complex is one of Budapest’s most distinctive façade greening projects. The system was completed as the result of three years of planning, two years of careful plant cultivation, and one year of construction work, entirely designed and delivered by GWD.
For the Metrodom Group, creating a truly green, livable, and sustainable residential environment was a key objective. The green façade designed for the building is not only a striking architectural feature, but also provides tangible environmental, energy-efficiency, and aesthetic benefits for the residential complex.
The main components of the GWD FLEX system used in the Metrodom Green project are pre-grown climbing plant panels, a temporary support trellis, and specially designed planter boxes. This green façade system allows the vegetation to develop safely, in a controlled manner, and over the long term on the building’s façade.
The climbing plants, trained onto the external steel structure, begin from the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th floors and gradually dress the building in greenery. For the façade greening, we selected strong and resilient plant species, which were cultivated specifically for this residential building in Budapest over a period of two years. The plants were carefully installed, and continuous nutrient supply was ensured from the very moment of planting.
The planter boxes were filled with a specially designed growing medium, while the plants’ development is supported by an automated irrigation system. The system is integrated with the building’s smart solutions, allowing the green façade to be controlled remotely and fine-tuned according to current weather conditions.
This living building envelope reveals a new character in every season. Through the continuous transformation of evergreen and deciduous plants, the façade evolves dynamically throughout the year: it produces new shoots, changes colour, bears fruit, and continually offers a different visual experience. We believe that in densely built urban environments, vertical façade greening creates real value and contributes to the development of a more livable and healthier urban space.
